Register your kid's car seat

Registering your car seat lets the manufacturer contact you if it is recalled. It takes a few minutes and uses the model number and date on the seat label.

Why registration matters

Manufacturers must notify registered owners when a car seat is recalled. If you never send the card or fill out the online form, that notice may never reach you. Registration is free, and it is separate from product warranties or marketing sign-ups.

After you register, also check recalls once in a while. You can search on KidsRecallChecker or use NHTSA's car seat recall search.

Find the model number and date of manufacture

Look for a white sticker on the seat shell. Common spots are the side of the base, the back of the seat, or under the seat pad. The label lists the model number, date of manufacture, and often a serial number. Use those exact values on the registration form. Do not copy numbers from the box alone.

MODEL 12345 DOM 03/15/24
Side of the seat shell: many labels sit where the seat meets the base.
Child restraint label Model number: G1234ABC Date of manufacture: 2024-03-15 Serial: SN-987654
Copy the model number and date of manufacture exactly as printed.

Register by mail

  1. Find the postage-paid registration card that came with the seat. It is often attached to the harness or tucked in the manual.
  2. Fill in your name, address, email if asked, model number, and date of manufacture from the seat label.
  3. Detach the card on the perforation and drop it in the mail. Do not add postage if the card says postage is prepaid.
  4. Keep a photo of the completed card or a note of the date you mailed it.

Register online

  1. Open the manufacturer's registration page from the table below, or start from NHTSA's car seat registration guidance.
  2. Enter the model number, date of manufacture, and serial number from the white label on the seat.
  3. Add your contact details so the manufacturer can reach you about recalls.
  4. Submit the form and save the confirmation page or email if one is offered.

FAQ

Why should I register my car seat?

Registration lets the manufacturer reach you if the seat is recalled or needs a safety notice. Without it, you may only hear about a recall by chance.

What information do I need?

You need the model number, the date of manufacture, and usually a serial number. All of these are on the white label on the seat, and they are also printed on the postage-paid card that came with the seat.

I lost the registration card. Can I still register?

Yes. Use the manufacturer's online form from the table on this page, or follow NHTSA's registration guidance. You can also email NHTSA.ODI.ced@dot.gov if you cannot reach the manufacturer.

Does registering put me on a marketing list?

Federal rules limit how manufacturers may use car seat registration data. The forms say the information is for recall contact. Read the manufacturer's privacy notice on the form you use.

I bought a used seat. Should I register it?

Yes, if you plan to use it. Register under your own name and contact details so you get future notices. Also check for open recalls before you install it.
